                       Wolfsbane: Part Two

When you got home to your familiar, run down little house, it was with a feeling of happiness rather than the usual dread that followed. With dog Gilbert at your heels, it was almost as if all of your worries had just floated away and been replaced with, well…joy. It was like…Gilbert had been the cause of it. Which, frankly, should have been the complete opposite. Being that you didn't really have a way to take care of the two of you with your current resources.

You pushed those thoughts aside, however, as you unlocked the door—which was normally stuck in the door jam, but luckily not today—and walked into the darkness of your home. The white shaggy beast followed close behind, raising his snout and taking deep breaths, as if to get accustomed to the house. You felt a bit embarrassed about the poor state the house was in, having Gilbert inside. More so than usual. Even though he was a dog, you felt that Gilbert had a somewhat human personality.

So when he laid his red eyes on the disarray and chaos of the small, dirty, and cheap house and looked up at you with an unreadable expression, your self consciousness levels lowered even more.

"I-I know it's not much, b-but I have reasons for that! So don't look at me like that!" You defended, grabbing a towel off of the kitchen chair (you had the bad habit of just throwing laundry on any available furniture…which probably didn't help with the current messy state of the house as it was) and using it to dry your soaking (h/c) hair. "At least it's a home out of the rain, right? So…d-don't look at me like that, you stupid dog!"

The "stupid dog" in question made that raspy "kesesesese" noise again and poked his cold nose into your leg, nuzzling his face against you affectionately. His tail wagged from side to side, sending droplets of water over the kitchen floor. You groaned and grabbed another towel, starting to rub at his shaggy white coat in an effort to dry him off somewhat.

"If you're going to judge the crappiness of my house, you can at least attempt to not worsen the disaster area it is," You grumbled, rubbing the towel against his back and head.

Gilbert let out a yip and gave you a toothy grin. You noticed just how…sharp…his canines were. Almost…wolfish. In fact, now that you thought about it, you had never seen a dog like him before. Certainly not in (country of origin), at least. Was he just some mutt created by years of interbreeding with vast German species? They would certainly have to be big and strong to create such a large and intimidating-appearing dog such as Gilbert was. You were glad he was such a sweetheart.

"Well, you're all dry now," You sighed, patting his head as he sat on his haunches, looking up at you with what you could only describe as puppy dog eyes. "What? You trying to guilt trip me into doing something?" You blinked in confusion, before realization dawned on you. "Oh! You're probably hungry, huh? Well…I'm sorry, big guy, I don't have any dog food…or any actual food for that matter…"

You paused, biting your lip.

"…This is going to be harder than I thought. Hey! I think I have some leftover sausage in the fridge—the butcher people had it on sale the other day. It's not much, but will that work?"

At the word "sausage" Gilbert's eyes lit up and he barked loudly, whining and headbutting your leg hopefully. His rear end wiggled enthusiastically, red eyes sparkling, and he leapt up and gave you a big sloppy lick across the cheek.

"Eugh! That's gross, I don't know where your mouth has been, you mutt!" You laughed, wiping the slobber off of your skin and giving Gilbert a teasing half-glare. He just returned it with that same lupine grin, the one that almost was like a smirk to you. You rolled your eyes and made your way to the fridge, grabbing the sausage plate out and putting it in the microwave to heat it up a bit. You were glad that despite the heavy rain you had just gotten, your power was managing to behave. So far. You had learned to never be too hopeful in this house.

"Well, it's not much, but it'll have to do for now, okay?" You set the plate down on the floor in front of him when it was done in the microwave. Gilbert descended on the plate with an excited bark, tail wagging at a million miles per minute as he noisily began to gobble the meat up. You laughed a bit and patted his head, before standing up straight.

"I'm going to go take a shower, now. …and I do not know why I felt the need to tell you that." Your cheeks flushed with embarrassment, and you quickly started to head for the bathroom. You hoped the plumbing would cooperate. "J-Just stay in the kitchen while I'm in here, okay?" As you closed the door, you heard an answering bark that almost had an affirmative tone to it. Shaking the idea out of your head, you stripped off your wet clothes and tossed them to the floor, stepping into the cracked shower and turning the water on as hot as it was.

…and of course, it was freezing.

"DAMMIT!" You yelped in shock, jumping away from the chilling spray just as it sent icy tingles across your skin. Please don't tell me the hot water isn't going to work…

And of course, because that was just your luck, it didn't.

"…I wish to stab things now," You grumbled as you avoided the freezing water as much as you could while you tried to soap up. It wasn't as easy as you thought. "I'm taking a shower to GET WARM, not freeze my ass off even more! God, I hate this house…I need to get a job, and FAST, so I can afford something better…"

Your mind drifted to the awful state of the home you were currently in. When you had first moved in, it had been an absolute wreck. A few days of backbreaking cleaning and hard work had turned it into less of an enclosed trash dump and more like a very minor rat's nest, but still. You knew it was a piece of crap. Everything was always breaking or just plain didn't work, it was small, lonely, and the amount of stains and broken glass that littered the floor which you would find made you feel as if you were living in a drug dealer's home.

Now that you had brought Gilbert home…things could get worse, right?

But no…something inside of you insisted that things were not going to take a turn for the worse. You felt, for some reason, that things would get…better. Which confused you. When you were broke and living in a practical standing liability, what good would taking care of a very large dog do? Feeding the two of you was going to be expensive, not to mention possibly medicinal care for Gilbert…you would feel horrible if he caught some canine disease and died when in your care.

Thoughts such as these plaguing your mind, you stepped out of the cold shower and shut it off once you were all clean, shivering somewhat violently. You grabbed the largest towel you could find in the cupboard and wrapped it around you, rubbing your freezing skin in attempts to both dry and warm it. Eventually you were just down to a dull chill, and you kept the towel wrapped around you as you stepped out of the bathroom and headed for your room to find some clothes.

Only to trip over a certain furry body and land flat on your face.

"W-what the hell?!" You cried out as your face made contact with the floor, spitting out a dust bunny that was oh so conveniently there. You groaned and lifted your face up, only to see a concerned Gilbert standing over you with an almost what you perceived to be apologetic look in his eyes. The white beast nudged your damp hair with his snout, sniffing, and stepped back and sat on his haunches, looking reproachful. You glared as you propped yourself up on your elbows, giving him a stern look.

"Gilbert! Bad dog! I told you to wait in the kitchen! If you aren't going to listen to me, then I'm going to kick you out, you know! I could have broken my nose! What were you doing just standing out the bathroom door and—"

You cut off when you noticed something unusual about the dog across from you.

He was staring.

At your chest.

Which was kind of straining out of the towel (which was unraveling a bit from the fall you had just taken), as you were sort of laying on the floor right now.

You raised an eyebrow at Gilbert, whose eyes were wide and fur seeming to almost go a bit…pink…? around where his "cheeks" would be if he was of the human anatomy. The dog swallowed and stepped back a bit, before quickly averting his head and staring at the wall instead of your chest.

A grin spread across your lips. "…you are quite the odd dog, you know that? A pervert! You were so looking at my boobs just now! What, are you telling me that you're such an intelligent dog that you have the human capacity to be embarrassed about taking a peek at my chest?"

The only answer you got was a half hearted "kesesese" noise that rasped from Gilbert's throat, and he concentrated more on the wall. You laughed loudly and got up, scratching his head as you simultaneously fixed the towel around you so it didn't fall off. "You certainly are an odd one," You mumbled affectionately, before a sudden shiver ripped through your body. Having spent almost an entire day in the rain coupled with a freezing shower did not do well for one's feeble and human body.

You shivered and rubbed your arms with your hands in an effort to warm yourself up. "I-I'm gonna go put s-some clothes on n-now…n-no following me i-into my room a-and trying t-to watch me get dressed, p-pervy dog," You said with a teeth chattering grin to Gilbert, before making your way to your room. Gilbert did indeed follow, but obediently sat in front of the door and gave you a concerned look and a whine before you shut the door.

"Weird…h-he is such a weird d-dog…" You shook as you tore through your closet for the warmest thing you could find. You were thanking God that you hadn't been a total idiot and moved to some place like Russia now. "H-he seems almost human…m-maybe the rain's just getting to me, a-and I'm getting a fever or something…"

Which was suck, considering you had been planning on going job hunting again tomorrow.

You sighed and pulled on a pair of woolen pajama pants and a long sleeved shirt, putting some fuzzy socks on while you were at it. You opened the door back up, still shivering, and stroked Gilbert's ear. "W-Well, my odd pervy dog buddy of mine…I-I think it's time for bed. I-I'm kind of exhausted now, and I want to get up e-early for another round of job hunting…"

You trailed off as Gilbert's eyes suddenly met yours, and you found yourself lost in their ruby hues. He leaned forward and pressed his nose to your forehead, the warm, damp skin brushing against your clammy one. He woofed very softly in the back of his throat…

…and then your vision went white.

Images swirled around in your mind. Jaws snapping, blood dribbling from lethal fangs. Lupine creatures with black, brown, white, gray, and a whole menagerie of colors bounding through a thick forest. Bright, almost human eyes glittering in the shadows as a wolfish maw emerged partially, fangs bared. Growls, yips, barks chorusing along with a single howl. The figure of a woman in the moonlight, violet eyes hard and stony as she raised a pale hand, a beaded necklace dangling from her slender fingers.

And then the handsome human face that flashed by so quickly, haughty smirk stretched across his face as his crimson eyes shone with laughter.

With a cry, you stumbled back and clutched your now throbbing head, expecting to fall back onto the floor. Only numb shock registered when there was suddenly something soft and muscular and furry behind you, holding you upright somewhat and bringing you to the bed. You crawled into the bed, shaking and (e/c) eyes wide as saucers as you stared down at the enigmatic expression of the white dog before you, before he hopped up onto the bed and curled next to you.

"G-Gilbert…w-what was…w-what's…"

Your mouth wasn't working properly, words just a jumbled mess as Gilbert pressed against your shivering body, licking your arm with small, comforting licks. He didn't tear his eyes away from you, nor did you make any effort to do so yourself. The two of you stared into each other's gazes, confused and slightly hazy (e/c) orbs meeting intelligent, calm, and almost hopeful bloodied stars.

And then your eyes slid shut, an overwhelming sensation of exhaustion passing over you and you slumped against the bed, still shivering slightly. You were limp as you felt Gilbert get up and move closer to you, hot and furry body like a hot blanket for you. You unconsciously wrapped your arms around his bulk, fingers tangling in his thick fur, and pressed your face against his wondrously warm figure.

"G-Gilbert…" You mumbled, shivering slowly beginning to come to a halt as his body heat merged with yours. A most peculiar heat spread throughout your entire body, making you feel as if you were safe; protected. You didn't know what to make of it.

All you knew was that hugging the white dog beside you was possible the most calming experience ever. Especially when he gave you a gentle lick on the cheek and rested his large head on your shoulder, hot breath fanning against your cool skin and warming it as well.

Gilbert woofed softly, squirming a bit as he pressed closer against you. Your breathing eventually eased, all the dizziness from that freakish plethora of mental images burning through your mind gone and replaced by a sense of absolute lethargy.

You were so tired…

All you wanted was sleep…

And before you knew it, you sunk into a dreamless world, a sense of security washing over you as you blacked out gratefully into sleep.

                              xxxxx

The "dog" stared down at the human girl wrapped around him, crimson eyes watching her carefully. Her (h/c) hair messily lay against the pillow, face relaxed as she breathed in and out evenly, arms tight around him. Gilbert sighed and couldn't help but smile, muzzle brushing against (name)'s forehead tenderly.

"I really hope you're the one to break this unawesome curse…being in my wolf form constantly is going to become really annoying."

His voice cut clear through the silence of the room, German accent heavy but understandable as his jaws stretched in a smirk.

"If I was going to accidentally see you in all your towel-clad glory, I would like to appreciate it better in my awesome, sexy, human form. But neeeeiiiin…this stupid curse is stupid."

Gilbert huffed, pouting, before his eyes softened and he licked (name)'s cheek again, issuing a soft mumble from the sleeping girl pressed snugly against him. "Well, at least you didn't go into a convulsive shock-coma thing like I was afraid you would when I connected our minds…so that's good, ja? You just might be the one to break this curse…"

Gilbert laughed a bit, the "kesesesese" ringing clear through the dead silence. It was dry, however—wan and sarcastic.

"But then there's the problem of that stick-in-the-arsch Luddy having a fit when he realizes a normal human was the one to break it…he'll rip my fangs out with a pair of pliers! I'm breaking so many rules right now…but fuck it, this is the only way to return normal. Like that witch said…"

His eyes narrowed as he remembered.

"…only the blood, tears, and love of a normal human girl can give me back my human form. Und (name)…"

He looked down at her again, a gentle smile on his wolfish jaw.

"…I honestly hope you're that girl. 'Cause I think you're worthy of being graced with the presence as someone as awesome as myself~ Gilbert Beilschmidt!"

That being said, the wolf settled back down against (name) and closed his ruby eyes, soft "kesesesese" lessening into nothing more than a puff of breath as Gilbert was lulled into sleep as well.
